GET A GRIP WITH OUR HANDMADE MUGS

It seems every potter has something that makes his or her pottery unique. One of the most characteristic aspects of Mountain ArtsPottery is the thumb knob on our mugs. This is something we instituted from the beginning of our business, thirty-five years ago. Every handle we put on our pottery has the thumb knob. It is simply a small piece of rolled clay that is placed on the top of the handle and pressed into shape. Not only is it an identifying feature, it also serves the purpose of contributing to the balance and stability of the mug when you are drinking from it.

If you by chance have a mug without the thumb knob, then you have a special piece of pottery that somehow slipped through the cracks in processing. In the past three decades, we have changed shapes, added shapes, and altered glazes, but the thumb knob has remained consistent from the beginning. Several years ago, some people from Billings were driving to Big Sky, saw the billboard picture of our mug and exclaimed, “that's our mug!” and they pulled into the store. What they recognized was the thumb knob on the mug they had purchased 10 -12 years before at an art show in Billings.

We will always continue to try to improve things and keep fresh new ideas in our pottery, but you can always expect to find a thumb knob on the top of any Mountain Arts Pottery mug.
